The screening of feature films in the UK is not limited to cinemas belonging to the major circuits. There is a thriving sector of non-commercial providers bringing a wide variety of programming, often specialised in nature, to local communities which would otherwise be underserved by the commercial operators. This sector is often referred to as community cinema. Members of local communities are often more involved in the programming of such cinemas than their commercial counterparts. Screenings of films in this sector are in venues such as village halls, mixed arts venues independent cinemas and the like and are often run as film societies.
The Yorkshire Group of Film Societies is a Regional Group of the British Federation of Film Societies (BFFS). The BFFS represents and supports an affiliated ‘chain’ of more than 480 ‘occasional cinemas’ throughout the UK, run by volunteers, which accounted for some 375,000 admissions in 2009/10 and screened over 739 different titles (compared to 503 releases in UK cinemas).
The film society movement in the UK is now over 80 years old and the BFFS to which it gave rise, remains dedicated to maintaining the movement’s long and honourable tradition in providing access to independent cultural cinema and in the case of many rural communities the only access to cinema.
Film societies are run by enthusiasts who have a love of cinema and who work to share their enjoyment and experiences with others. They show a wide range of films, which often cannot be, seen anywhere else in the area: the best of cinema from all around the world.
There are many Film Societies in Yorkshire and details of their programmes are shown in this brochure. They are all open to the general public.
To set up a Film Society all you need are a few likeminded people, a suitable venue, access to projection equipment and a lot of enthusiasm.
